Deborah Knight confirms she's replacing Steve Price at 2GB following Today Show axing

‘How lucky am I!’ Deborah Knight confirms she’s replacing Steve Price at 2GB following Today Show axing… as he admits it ‘wasn’t his choice’ to leave the station after almost 10 years on-air

Deborah Knight has confirmed she’ll be taking over the coveted afternoon time slot on 2GB and 4BC in 2020.

The axed Today show host will replace Steve Price, who was ousted from his radio gig this week after almost a decade on air – a move he said was not his decision.

Deb, 47, says she’ll have the ‘best of both worlds’ as she hosts the show Monday to Friday, while continuing on Nine as a newsreader and a fill-in for absences on Today.

In a statement, Deborah said: ‘How lucky am I – I've got the best of both worlds – continuing with my TV role at Nine in both news and the Today Show. Bring on 2020!’

She continued: ‘I got my start in journalism behind the radio mic in Wagga Wagga, and I'm really excited about embarking on a new challenge with 2GB and 4BC.

‘There's nothing like radio for making an immediate connection with your audience, and Afternoons offers the chance to look at the big issues of the day and have some fun as well.’

Deborah had been a regular guest host with Steve for months prior to landing her new gig, which will commence on Monday 13 January.

Before the news was confirmed, Steve, 64, spoke out on the rumours that Deborah would be taking the reigns, telling  The Daily Telegraph: ‘She is very competent. She has had a hard year on the Today show so if she gets a new opportunity, that's great for her.’

He added that it wasn’t his decision to leave the network but the new owners, Nine Entertainment, ‘have decided to go in a new direction.’

‘We just couldn’t agree to what I was going to do next year. Channel Nine, the new owners, decided to go on a different direction,’ he told the publication.

Steve went on to say that he had a ‘ big profile’ and may crop up on television more as a result.

‘I’m not annoyed, a little surprised, but not annoyed. It is a big world out there, I have got a big profile, a big brand. The world is my oyster,’ he explained.

The bombshell news comes just weeks after Deborah and co-host Georgie Gardner were axed from Network Nine’s morning program following months of dismal ratings.

According to The Daily Telegraph, the ratings had ‘been the nail in the coffin for the current crew’.

It was then revealed in November that Allison Langdon would join Karl Stefanovic as the Today show’s new hosts next year, in a major TV shake-up.

However, Deborah has remained on the panel for the time being, with Tom Steinfort filling in as co-host.

The full line-up for the revamped Today Show has not yet been decided.
